If you don’t wear your retainers, your teeth will shift!

Retainers are a very important part of the orthodontic treatment. In order for them to work effectively the patient needs to follow a few simple guidelines:

Listen to your orthodontist! Retainers can do their job only if you faithfully follow Dr. Skolnick’s instructions for wearing them. And please keep in mind, they are not doing anything if they are in your pocket! They only work when you wear them in your mouth. Remember – wearing the retainer after your braces are removed is the best way to preserve the healthy, beautiful smile you worked so hard to get.

It’s very important to keep your retainers clean. The best way to do this is to brush your retainer every time you brush your teeth. Also, you can soak them in a retainer cleaner. For your convenience, we can recommend some brands for you.

Handle with care

You should always have your retainer case on you. When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in its case. Retainers are expensive and easy to lose. Beware of the “trouble situations” like taking it out to eat. Avoid wrapping it in a napkin or leaving it on a tray because more than likely that will lead to an accidental throw out. Also, it is never a good idea to put your retainer on the floor as it can easily be stepped on or chewed on by pets that want straight teeth too.
