Types of Braces Overview
Traditional Metal Braces
Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces are the most popular type. Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and better-looking than they have ever been.
A combination of brackets, archwires, and elastic bands are used to straighten the teeth. Patients can feel free to express themselves with the fun, brightly colored elastics that can be switched every visit.
Invisible Orthodontic Appliances
and Invisalign®
Clear braces are an orthodontic option that utilizes invisible, removable aligners to straighten your teeth comfortably. The series of aligners are almost undetectable and can be taken out during treatment, which allows you easier access to your teeth for brushing and flossing.
There is also the added bonus of getting to eat and drink whatever you want. Clear aligners are used for select treatment options, so it is important to check with your Orthodontist regarding whether or not you are a candidate.
Ceramic Braces
An alternative to metal braces, ceramic braces are made of a clear material. Since they are translucent and less noticeable on your teeth, they are popular amongst older teenage and adult patients.
The drawback to ceramic braces is that the brackets are larger and more fragile than the metal option.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are small braces that are placed inside the mouth on the back (lingual) of the teeth.
These braces are available for mild cases that have limited orthodontic needs. In other words, these braces are not for everybody. You must be a candidate in order to wear lingual braces.
